The location was originally the mansion of Dr. Sylvester Willard, first physician at the Cayuga County Asylum for the poor, a trustee of the Young Ladies Institute and of the Elmira Female College, as well as a philanthropic president of the Oswego Starch Company in 1884. In the modern day, the location is home to the Cayuga Museum of History & Art.
